NWEA FAQs
What is NWEA?
NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) provides research-based online adaptive benchmarks called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP). As a result of NWEA benchmark, educators can make informed decisions to promote students’ academic growth.
How do MAP benchmarks work?
MAP benchmarks are designed to target a student’s academic performance in mathematics and reading grades 6th-12th. The computer adjusts the difficulty of the questions so that each student takes their own unique benchmark. As the student answers correctly, questions become more difficult. If the student answers incorrectly, the questions become easier. This adjustment allows teachers to see exactly what skills students have learned and what skills they need to learn. In addition, MAP uses a RIT scale (Rasch unit). The RIT scale is an equal-interval scale much like feet and inches on a yardstick. More specifically, it is used to chart your child’s academic growth from year to year.
What is the purpose of MAP?
To determine how best to support students’ learning. MAP helps teachers determine needs, personalize individual learning, and monitor growth of each student throughout the year.
How do teachers and school counselors use the MAP results?
MAP benchmarks are important to teachers because they keep track of progress and growth in basic skills. They let teachers know where a student’s strengths are and if help is needed in any specific areas. Teachers use this information to help them guide what instruction is needed in the classroom. In addition, teachers will discuss results with students and set growth goals with them throughout the year. School Counselors may help students access the interactive College Explorer tool built into MAP. This powerful tool links MAP scores with national benchmarks for colleges, universities, and even specific majors. The College Explorer can help students develop a plan, consider new possibilities, and put post-secondary dreams within reach.
When will students take the MAP?
Three times a year (fall, winter, and spring) time is set aside in class. Students log in to MAP using their school-assigned Chromebooks.
When and how are results available?
Results are available upon completion of the benchmark. Caregivers and students may ask their school counselor to view their results and provide their meaning of them. If you or your child would like a copy of the results, they can be provided as well.
